What would you save from a burning house? A puppy? Sure. Prized family treasure? Probably not. A few cans of beer? ‘No, not in a million years'. A man picks his beer.
WSFA reports that a house fire broke out on 42nd St. near Oates Ave. in Columbus, Thursday afternoon, when six adults and two young children were inside watching television when the room began filling with smoke.
After the children were rescued and everyone made it outside safely, a man (Walter Serpit) who walks with a cane broke all the rules of burning houses and went back into his home to retrieve something he left behind.
Serpit was able to save several cans of beer and he escaped the home without getting burned.
But something must have compelled him to return to the burning house.
"I told them to get the kids out and everything, and me myself, being an alcoholic, I was trying to get my beer out," he told reporters. "You feel me?"
And that, ladies and gentleman, is the most honest man in America.
We don't understand you, and obviously you're battling some demons here, and hopefully this event will give you some clarity, but for the moment, Serpit, we definitely feel you.
The Red Cross arrived shortly after firefighters extinguished the flames and they are helping the family get back on their feet.
